## Research

The Psychiatry Department is involved in a wide range of research to better understand mental illness, improve diagnosis and treatment, and provide greater accessibility to mental health services, with a focus on multicultural care.

Research is conducted in many specialties, including maternal and child mental health; veterans’ health; specific mental illnesses like [post-traumatic stress disorder](https://www.bmc.org/restore), depression, and schizophrenia; addiction psychiatry, Alzheimer’s disease; refugee health; and global psychiatry.

The department also works globally through two research centers: the [Global & Local Center for Mental Health Disparities](www.bumc.bu.edu/psychiatry/psychiatry-research-center/global-and-local-center-for-mental-health-disparities/) and the [Africa Global Mental Health Institute (AGMHI)](www.agmhi.org/).
