Statement of Commitment

As part of the institutional mission to provide consistently excellent and accessible health service to all in need of care regardless of status and ability to pay, Boston Medical Center (BMC) is committed to a premier learning environment for all members of its community in collaboration with Boston University and other institutions.

BMC strives to support its mission of Graduate Medical Education (GME) by providing continued support and sponsorship for all of its accredited programs. Consistent with the Institutional and Program requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), it is expected that each residency and fellowship program will appoint the most qualified applicants, recruit and retain outstanding faculty, offer comprehensive educational programs while maintaining a balance between training, service and research, and support the professional development and personnel growth of each resident and fellow.

  • Support a Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) that has policy and oversight responsibilities for all GME programs.
  • Fund a central administrative Office of Graduate Medical Education to support all GME programs, GMEC and GMEC Subcommittees.
  • Offer educational resources (library, teaching space and equipment, information systems) and curricula common to all GME programs.
  • Provide sufficient educational, financial and human resources to ensure the effective implementation and support of al programs in compliance with all accreditation requirements.
  • Provide a learning environment that emphasizes patient safety and quality improvement.
  • Ensure that all residents and fellows have the opportunity to learn and provide supervised safe patient care.
  • Provide residents and fellows with opportunities to participate in patient safety and quality improvement activities at the institutional level.
  • Ensure that all residents and fellows are treated fairly and have ample opportunity to communicate any concerns, including errors and near-misses.
  • Facilitate and formalize collaborations and affiliations with other teaching hospitals and community facilities and with Boston University School of Medicine.
  • Provide hospital professional, informational and support services that are adequate to meet the educational goals of each program.
