Una persona con apnea del sueño experimenta una respiración que se detiene y comienza durante el ciclo del sueño. Los dos tipos principales de apnea del sueño son la apnea central del sueño, cuando el cerebro no envía las señales correctas a los músculos que controlan la respiración, y la apnea obstructiva del sueño, cuando los músculos de la garganta se relajan.
