 El trastorno por estrés postraumático (TEPT) y el trastorno por estrés agudo (TEA) son afecciones de salud mental similares. Las personas con PTSD han experimentado un evento traumático y luego experimentan pensamientos incontrolables del episodio junto con flashbacks, pesadillas y ansiedad severa que duran meses o años e interfieren con el funcionamiento normal. Las personas que padecen TEA experimentan síntomas de estrés severo en las semanas y meses posteriores a un evento traumático. Si los síntomas del TEA duran más de un mes, una persona puede desarrollar TEPT.
