La diabetes ocurre cuando el cuerpo tiene demasiada glucosa (azúcar) debido a una interrupción de la insulina que proviene del páncreas. La insulina regula la glucosa, que es una fuente importante de energía para las células que forman los músculos y otros tejidos, y también alimenta la función cerebral. Existen diferentes tipos de diabetes: tipo 1 (la más grave y crónica), tipo 2 (también crónica), prediabetes (niveles anormales de azúcar en sangre) y gestacional (afecta a mujeres embarazadas). Con un manejo cuidadoso de la medicación, la dieta y el ejercicio, se puede controlar la diabetes.
