The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at BMC, which admits more than 1,500 patients annually, is led by surgeons who specialize in providing the highest level of care for patients recovering from emergency surgery as well as those with traumatic injuries or serious illness who require advanced surgical or trauma expertise. This includes patients experiencing multisystem organ failure and those requiring intensive perioperative monitoring or complex care related to a broad range of general, vascular, thoracic, urologic, neurologic, and orthopedic conditions. The SICU team also cares for patients being treated with ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) or ECLS (extracorporeal life support).

Our multidisciplinary care brings together a nursing staff with an average of more than 20 years of critical care experience as well as respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, and members of other BMC teams.
