We also train professionals to serve this population, conduct research to understand and implement best practices, and promote health and human rights, locally and globally, to improve the quality of life for survivors of torture and their communities. ## Mental Health Services and Connection to Other Types of Care We offer psychotherapy (talk therapy) and can provide pharmacology (prescription medication) to improve wellbeing and functioning. We connect clients with: - Primary care and referrals to medical subspecialties - Dental care - Support groups ## Case Management [Patient navigators](/departments/cancer-center/support/patient-navigation "Cancer Center: Cancer Center Support: Patient Navigation | Boston Medical Center (bmc.org)") at Boston Medical Center assist with orienting new clients and providing them with the tools they need to successfully navigate the complex healthcare system. We also provide clients with: - Assistance obtaining health insurance coverage - Referrals to local food pantries - Connection to resources for finding safe and secure housing - Connection to assistance with family reunification ## Legal Services We provide clients with forensic evaluation documenting the physical and emotional effects of torture. This allows your doctor to find any changes or issues in your colon or rectum, and remove abnormal tissue if necessary. Once comfortable, the physician will then examine the area using an endoscope—a lighted tube with a small camera at the end. The physician will be able to view any abnormalities and take a tissue samples (biopsies) if necessary. In esophageal conditions, the surgeon typically cuts the muscle fibers in the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, to correct the condition.
