REMINDER: PPE Guidelines for Ambulatory Areas and Non-COVID Inpatients

Hospital employees and providers caring for patients in ambulatory areas and non-COVID inpatients should don a surgical mask, eye covering (goggles, safety glasses or face shield), and a single pair of gloves. Healthcare workers providing patient care for COVID+ patients or patients under investigation (PUI) should wear an N95, face shield, gown, and two pairs of gloves. We will be sending out more detailed information and guidance over the next week as we are noticing that these policies, designed to protect our workforce, are not being followed correctly.

UPDATED: Mask Usage and Physical Distancing on the BMC Campus

In order to protect the health of our staff, patients and visitors, it is critical that we all follow and model appropriate protocol with mask usage and physical distancing in all shared and public spaces. In order to help staff maintain 6 ft. of distance when not providing clinical care, please note:

  • New eating and gathering areas with tables and chairs have been set up inside clinical buildings. Please use these when eating during the workday.
  • Workrooms must be used only for clinical work. Do not eat in those rooms and be sure to wear masks at all times in the workrooms.
  • Additional tables have been set up on the Moakley Green for our use during the warm weather.
  • Because there are limited visitors on campus, we are able to use some alternative space on the clinical floors. However, use of these areas is time-limited.

All staff members are asked to stay vigilant about wearing masks and maintaining physical distancing even when outside of the hospital. Large in-person gatherings where it is difficult to maintain at least 6 ft. of separation from others, or where other participants are unmasked, pose a risk for COVID-19 transmission.

REMINDER: Daily Symptom Screener Required for All Employees on BMC’s Main Campus

Employees and licensed independent practitioners scheduled for shifts on BMC’s main campus or in Quincy are required to use the COVID-19 symptom screening tool in Enterprise Health as part of the daily screening process prior to coming to work each shift.

To use the screening tool, please log in to Enterprise Health, the employee health portal, by entering your BMC e-mail and network password. After logging in, you will see a list of seven symptoms. You will need to indicate whether or not you’re experiencing any of these symptoms by clicking “Yes” or “No.” 

Once you do that first log in, you will receive an email and/or text each day to complete before you come to work. The daily symptom questionnaire takes about 10 seconds to complete.

NEW: Gerson 2130 Mask Discontinued

All staff using a Gerson 2130 N95 mask must get fit tested into another mask, as the Gerson 2130 has been discontinued.

  • Friday, August 28: 6-9 a.m., Menino 2B

NEW: Schwartz Center Rounds – How Do We Heal? The Isolation & Emotional Impact of Caring For COVID Patients in the SICU

Caregivers from the SICU and other members of the BMC healthcare community will gather virtually on Friday, September 4, from 8 - 9 a.m. to share their emotions and reflections regarding the immense challenges of the COVID pandemic; support each other to reduce isolation; increase compassion towards themselves, each other, patients and families; and identify elements central to caregivers’ recovery and healing. This event is offered in conjunction with Department of Surgery Rounds. More information can be found at
