 A dialysis shunt, also called a dialysis fistula, is a connection between a vein and artery that helps your body create the flow of blood it needs for dialysis to work.

If you have a dialysis shunt, dialysis will be delivered through two needles inserted into this connected vein and artery. This is the most effective way to get dialysis.
