A Personalized Approach at BMC’s Pediatric Pulmonary and Allergy Clinic

Boston Medical Center’s Pediatric Pulmonary and Allergy Clinic provides rapid access for diagnosis and treatment of patients with asthma, allergy and respiratory problems. The skilled team of doctors and nurse practitioners offers personalized care with an emphasis on building a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the concerns of families, schools and primary care physicians.

The service offers evaluation and treatment for the full spectrum of pulmonary and allergy conditions including:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic lung disease of prematurity
  • Food and skin allergies
  • Hay fever
  • Immunodeficiencies
  • Lung disorders
  • Sinusitis

Expert care. Pediatric Pulmonary and Allergy Division Director Robyn Cohen, MD, MPH, leads a team of fellowship-trained and board-certified pediatric physicians. Her team includes pediatric pulmonologist Hong-Phuong Vo, MD, MPH.

Nurse practitioner and certified asthma educator Lois Doerr, NP, provides one-on-one consultation to families navigating the many treatments and resources needed to care for an asthmatic child.

New addition to the team, Tatiana Kiernan, RN, CPNP, brings extensive experience treating children with respiratory illnesses and helps extend the department’s clinical effectiveness.

Fast Evaluation and Treatment. Rapid diagnosis is key to addressing children with allergic and pulmonary disorders. In most instances patients can be seen at the clinic within two weeks of referral. The clinic offers the latest testing procedures, including:

  • Full spirometry
  • Flow /volume loops
  • Oximetry
  • Six-minute walk test
  • Fractional exhaled nitric oxide test
  • Allergy skin testing for foods and environmental agents
  • Referral for polysomnography

Patient-focused approach. The Pediatric Pulmonary and Allergy team is committed to the highest level of service and personalized care for each child. Many providers on the team speak multiple languages including Cape Verde Creole, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese. In addition, the clinic offers access to a variety of special programs to assist low-income families including the Health Leads Asthma Swim Program, the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership and The Kids Fund.

Multidisciplinary collaboration. Multidisciplinary collaboration is a hallmark of care at BMC for patients suffering from multiple health conditions. Physicians collaborate closely with staff in Pediatric Radiology, Pediatric Otolaryngology and Pediatric Gastroenterology to meet the needs of individual patients.
