Sometimes, a newborn may need a little extra care when they're first born. This page explains what may happen if your baby needs help with breathing, passes meconium before birth, or requires special medical support.

## Helping Your Baby Breathe

Most babies begin breathing on their own right after birth. Sometimes, babies need a little extra help—this is called neonatal resuscitation.

**Your care team may:**

- Give your baby oxygen through a small mask
- Place a soft tube in your baby’s lungs to help with breathing

## Meconium

Meconium is your baby’s first bowel movement. Occasionally, babies pass meconium into the amniotic fluid before birth. If this happens, a pediatrician will be present during delivery to check your baby’s breathing and provide care if needed.

## Special Care

If your baby needs additional help after birth, neonatologists—doctors who specialize in newborn care—are available in the hospital 24/7 to provide advanced support. Your care team will keep you informed every step of the way.
