Managing epilepsy can be difficult. To make it easier, Boston Medical Center is implementing a telemedicine program that will connect patients and families to their providers with less wait time and fewer travel costs.

All patients diagnosed with epilepsy through BMC’s pediatric neurology department will be given the choice of creating a virtual care plan via the platform go.ACT.md. Through this confidential care plan, patients and families can keep track of seizures, medications, and emergency action plans, as well as directly message or video conference with their providers. A telehealth support staff member will fill out the care plan on the patient’s behalf so that all medical information should be up-to-date.

Care plans are designed to be as accessible as modern social media, but can also be personalized. A typical interface looks like this:

It is also possible to add other healthcare providers to your child’s plan simply with their email address. This quickly transfers information between clinicians, and is a great way of simplifying your child’s medical care.

Telehealth Epilepsy Care Collaborative

The telemedicine platform above is a part of the Telehealth Epilepsy Care Collaborative, or TECC. TECC received a grant from the Maternal Child Health Bureau at the Health Resources and Services Administration to utilize telehealth technologies to expand access to high-quality specialty and primary care for children and youth with epilepsy.  The collaborative has implemented a new seizure screening tool delivered at our primary care and pediatric specialty care partners, works continuously to improve the ACT.md platform, and emphasizes transitioning youth to adult care. Ultimately, TECC aims to reduce barriers to care and ensure quality treatment is available for all patients with epilepsy.

To keep up to date on TECC’s work, or to learn more about the organization, please email cristina.camayd@bmc.org to be placed on our mailing list.
