(Boston)  Jennifer F. Tseng, MD, MPH, has been named Deputy Editor of JAMA Surgery, effective January 1, 2018.

Dr. Tseng serves as the Utley Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), and Surgeon-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center (BMC) in Boston, Massachusetts.  Her clinical specialty is surgical oncology and gastrointestinal surgery, with a focus on the upper gastrointestinal tract.  Prior to being recruited to BUSM/BMC in July 2017, Dr. Tseng was Chief of Surgical Oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. 

Dr. Tseng received her undergraduate degrees in English and biology from Stanford University and her medical degree from the University of California San Francisco.  She completed her general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Dr. Tseng also completed a research fellowship in molecular medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School followed by a clinical fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.  She then earned her MPH degree in clinical effectiveness from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Dr. Tseng founded and co-directs Surgical Outcomes Analysis & Research (SOAR), a clinical and outcomes research institute.  SOAR was initiated at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, continued at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, and is now based in Boston at BUSM/BMC.  Dr. Tseng’s research interests include developing models for cancer treatment-sequencing strategies, cancer biomarkers, and healthcare disparities and outcomes.  

Dr. Tseng is on the editorial boards of several journals and is an active member of numerous surgical societies, including the American Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Oncology.  She serves as the secretary of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) and as president-elect of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS).
