Manage Your Holiday Stress


Between entertaining guests, hosting parties, picking out the perfect present, cleaning, and baking – the holiday season can put a lot of added pressure on us. It’s easy to forget that these are days to savor and enjoy! Here are some tips to help prevent the stress that comes along with the holidays:

Shopping for Presents:

  • Stick to a budget.
  • Homemade gifts save money and add a personalized touch.
  • Go shopping during “off hours” (weekdays, before 5:00 p.m. if possible) to avoid crowds.
  • Stay alert to your surroundings when carrying bags in dark areas.
  • If you are hiding presents in your car, remember to keep them out of sight and always keep your car locked.

Cooking and Baking:

  • Plan your dishes ahead of time so that you have a list when you go grocery shopping.
  • Prepare anything you can ahead of time and freeze it.

Staying Healthy:

  • Add physical activity into your regular routine.
  • Make healthy dishes for the holidays. BMC’s Nutrition Resource Center can help!
  • Remember to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night!

Hosting a Party:

  • Be realistic – your guests don’t expect perfection.
  • Ask your family members or friends to help you with party prep and clean-up.
  • Ask each guest to bring their favorite dish so you don’t have to prepare everything.

Traveling:

  • If you’re traveling by car, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained, map your route in advance, and have a cell phone and charger with you in case of emergency.
  • If you’re traveling by plane, leave an extra hour early to anticipate lines, pack as lightly as possible (saving you time and money), and pack any presents in carry-on luggage.
  • No matter where you are traveling this holiday season, give a family member or friend your travel itinerary and contact information for where you are staying.
  • Give a family member or friend the keys to your house so that they can collect your mail, feed your pet, water your plants, etc.

Holiday Lighting Tips:

  • Never leave an open flame unattended.
  • If you are planning on putting up lights outside, use a wooden or fiberglass ladder.
  • Check lights to see their intended use – indoor or outdoor.
  • Never use actual candles to decorate the tree.
  • Turn off all indoor and outdoor lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

The holiday season is about spending time with people you care about and helping those in need. It’s also a time to reflect on all the positive things in your life! Don’t forget to take some time for yourself this holiday season.
