Heart Month is Here! Learn to “Lighten Up” Your Favorite Foods

February is Heart Month: a time to remember your heart, and how you can keep yourself healthy. Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, yet there are many easy things people can do to help keep their hearts healthy.

When it comes to cooking, consider the following substitutes to make your meals just a little bit healthier:

  • Use whole-wheat flour instead of white.
  • Increase your fiber intake by eating brown rice, whole-grain bread, and whole-wheat pasta
  • Cut calories by substituting low-fat or nonfat yogurt for sour cream
  • Make homemade salad dressing; store-bought dressings are high in sugar and sodium
  • Instead of adding salt to a dish, use salt-free herb blends, spices, or citrus juices
  • Substitute half a recipe’s suggested amounts of butter or oil with applesauce to reduce fat and calories
  • Swap out regular peanut butter with natural unsalted peanut butter
  • Use cacao nibs instead of chocolate chips when baking
  • Switch cream for evaporated skim milk when baking to reduce the fat
  • To cut calories in crusts, use reduced-fat graham crackers instead of sugar or Oreo crusts
