## About

Crisanto M. Torres, MD, MPH, FACS, is a board-certified trauma and acute care surgeon and surgical intensivist at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

Dr. Torres received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis and has been inducted ... into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed his general surgery residency training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania and subsequently completed fellowships in surgical critical care medicine and in trauma and acute care surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was an active member of the Division of Trauma’s Violence Intervention Program. He also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in epidemiology and biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Dr. Torres has a specific interest in the care of severely bleeding trauma patients as well as prehospital trauma care. He is actively involved in research, including work related to trauma resuscitation, whole-blood transfusions, hemorrhage control, and health equity in surgical care. His research spans trauma resuscitation, whole-blood transfusion, hemorrhage control, prehospital emergency care, and health equity. He has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DoD) and currently serves as a co-investigator on a DoD-funded study evaluating artificial intelligence–assisted triage of injured patients in the field.

Dr. Torres co-developed and now co-directs Massachusetts’ first prehospital whole-blood program and the first ground EMS field transfusion program in the state. He has also helped advance statewide protocols that enable EMS providers to administer blood before patients reach the hospital. By combining clinical care, research, and systems-level innovation, Dr. Torres is working to ensure that lifesaving trauma care can begin at the scene of injury, not at the hospital door.
