Preventive Medicine Faculty in Substance Abuse Prevention, funded through Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the Department of Health and Human Services. Through this program, he has supervised and mentored eight junior faculty in the development of clinical research skills in addiction medicine.

Dr. Samet is Principal Investigator of 3 R-01 grants through NIAAA and NIDA. His research agenda includes substance abuse, HIV infection, victimization experiences, educating physicians, and physician practices. Areas of particular focus include delay in establishing primary medical for HIV infection, and linking substance abuse treatment to primary care, and the impact of alcohol use on HIV infected patients. The database he has developed on subjects without prior primary medical care leaving a substance abuse detoxification unit and another of HIV-infected individuals with alcohol problems are unique in the country, especially in its inclusion of women and minority populations. He has mentored several junior faculty members in the use of these datasets to address gender issues in alcohol and HIV care. These include several studies addressing the role of domestic violence and other victimization on care outcomes in women affected with HIV or with substance abuse histories.
