Welcome
Boston University Medical Center was awarded the designation of Center of Excellence in Women's Health by the United
States Department of Health and Human Services in 1997 as a model of the best in women's healthcare. There are now 21
Centers of Excellence nationwide serving as national models to provide the best in women's health care.
Boston University Medical Center, Boston Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Quincy Medical Center and the Boston HealthNet Community Centers
will work in collaboration to advance women's health. The focus of the Center includes clinical care, women's health research and
education, and professional development of women in academic medicine.
While the scope of issues in women's health concerns women of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds,
the gaps in knowledge and clinical care are most acute in underserved communities. The Center's work focuses
particularly on the needs of women in Boston's underserved communities.
Dr. Karen Freund, chief of the Women's Health Group at Boston Medical Center, is the director of the Center of
Excellence. She is working closely with eight other co-directors whose specialties cover a broad range of interests.
