Memorandum:
To: Boston Medical Center Incoming Volunteers
From: Dave Hinchen, Director of Volunteer Services
Re: Immunizations
Volunteers are required to provide the following documentation:
1. Immunization or immunity to: Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Two doses of MMR are acceptable or a titer from your physician. If you are unable to provide documentation, BMC will provide MMR immunizations/titer.
2. Tuberculosis (TB) testing with PPD is required. If you have documentation of a PPD test within 12 months of the start of your volunteer service, you will need to have a second TB test on your arrival at BMC, or get one at your doctor’s office within 4 weeks of starting. If you cannot provide documentation of a PPD test in the prior 12 months you will need to receive 2 TB tests, one initial test and one within 4 weeks. If you have had BCG in the past, you are not exempt from this policy unless you have had a positive PPD and can provide documentation of the prior positive PPD. You will then be required to provide the documentation below. TB skin testing will be repeated annually, thereafter.
If you have had a positive PPD in the past, you must provide a copy of medical documentation of a positive PPD report, report of your chest x-ray and a copy of your evaluation for TB prevention including any medical treatment you received. You should not have further TB testing. You will have a symptom check instead of a TB test when you arrive and annually thereafter.
TB testing is offered at BMC. Each TB test must be read within 48 to 72 hours by the BMC Office of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, or by your physician or nurse, with the induration measured in millimeters. Return the original form or legible copy to the address below.
3. History of having had Chicken Pox or documentation of immunity to chicken pox by titer, or by having had chicken pox vaccine. If you have not had chicken pox in the past nor had chicken pox vaccine, BMC will provide a titer or you may go to your physician and get a titer. If you are not immune you may be restricted from working in certain areas in the hospital.
4. In occasional situations where there is a likelihood that volunteers will be exposed to blood or body fluids, volunteers may be required to have Hepatitis B immunizations. The Hepatitis B series of vaccinations consist of three vaccines, administered over a six month period and followed by a titer for proof of immunity.
5. TdAP (Adacel) is offered to all volunteers who choose to obtain immunity to pertussis and tetanus. If you work in a department that cares for the pediatric population, it is highly recommended that you receive this vaccine.
6. All volunteers will have the opportunity to receive the Influenza vaccine during the flu season.
Please have your health care provider complete the immunization form or attach your
documentation to the form and return it to:
