Biography

Dr. Viken Babikian received his medical degree at the American University of Beirut. He completed his Neurology residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals and a stroke fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the Boston University Department of Neurology in 1986. He is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Vascular Neurology Residency at Boston University, and Co-Director of the Stroke Service at the Boston Medical Center.

Dr. Babikian's main research interests have been brain embolism, neuroimaging in stroke and the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders. He has been involved in more than 20 clinical research studies. He has published more than 125 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and edited four medical textbooks, all concerning cerebrovascular disorders. Dr. Babikian has also extensively lectured throughout the world, with more than 100 extramural lectures.

Dr. Babikian is a Fellow of the American Heart Association Stroke Council, the American Academy of Neurology, and the European Stroke Council. He has received the Golden Heart Award from the VA Boston Healthcare System, and an Honorable Professor Diploma by the Georgian State Medical Academy. He has served or continues to serve on the advisory committees of national professional organizations, and is a member of several medical societies including the American Neurological Association and the National Stroke Association.
