Biography

Dr. Alexander Norbash joined Boston Medical Center in 2004 as Chairman and Professor of Radiology. He is an interventional neuroradiologist with an active endovascular neurosurgical practice, having performed more than 6000 endovascular neuroradiology procedures, including more than 400 aneurysms, and more than 300 stents. He is among the first clinician-interventionalists to develop and describe the technology of stenting for the carotid and intracranial arteries. Other clinical interests include endovascular aneurysm therapy, endovascular treatment of arteriovenous malformations, and percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.

Dr. Norbash has been active in developing many novel materials and devices for endovascular neurologic therapies, including ultrathin stent placement for the endovascular treatment of surgically created aneurysms, endovascular photoacoustic recanalization (EPAR) as an alternative non-chemical method for stroke thrombolysis, resorbable polymer stents, injectable polymer and hydrogel vascular embolic and occlusive compounds, and operator controllable remote-motion microcatheters. Other research interests include endovascular and interventional simulation systems.

Prior to joining Boston Medical Center, Dr. Norbash was Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, directed the Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology Service at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and founded the Interventional Neuroradiology and Endovascular Neurosurgical practices at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Dr. Norbash has more than 60 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 12 book chapters, and served as the 2007-08 President of the New England Roentgen Ray Society. He was recognized as a "Top Doctor" in Radiology by Boston Magazine in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and by U.S. News and World Report in 2011.
