Specialized Rehabilitation Program

Due to the nature of spinal cord injury, it is crucial that patients receive specialized care from the moment of injury in order to maximize function and minimize secondary complications. At the New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center at BMC, your rehabilitation begins in the intensive care unit, continues to our rehabilitation facility and progresses to outpatient care and lifetime follow-up.

Our nursing and therapy staff provide care to a maximum of four patients per day. This unique staff to patient ratio enables us to create a supportive environment for patients to focus on rehabilitation while still having access to comprehensive services offered in a major medical facility. Our rehabilitation team focuses on restoring each individual’s functional capabilities by improving their physical health and psychological well being. Each patient will be given the opportunity to interact with other individuals with a spinal cord injury, as well as individuals who have reintegrated into the community. This offers our patients additional support, encouraging them to reach their maximum potential.

The New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center is committed to following the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, providing 3 hours of one-on-one individualized therapy to each patient daily. Patients also participate in educational sessions, social support sessions and therapeutic groups. These additional interventions are used to supplement their intensive individualized therapy sessions.
