Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is skilled treatment that helps individuals achieve independence in all aspects of their lives.  The occupational therapist at Boston Medical Center evaluates and treats various impairments that may impede patients’ progress or return to their baseline independence in basic and instrumental activities of daily living tasks.  A wide variety of patients benefit from occupational therapy services including: limitations following stroke or heart attack; arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other degenerative chronic conditions; birth injuries, learning problems, developmental disabilities; burns, spinal cord injuries, amputations; fractures from a fall or accident; vision or cognitive problems, and loss of hand and/or upper extremity function.  Customized treatment programs focus on improving patient’s ability to perform activities of daily living.

Interventions may include:

·        Therapeutic exercises to improve strength and range of motion

·        Neuromuscular reeducation

·        Balance retraining

·        Functional mobility training

·        Vision and cognitive evaluation and treatment

·        Self care training

·        Home safety evaluations

·        Adaptive equipment recommendations and usage training

·        Custom splint fabrication

·        Patient/caregiver education and training
