Research and Education
Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a premier academic medical institution located in a city renowned for scientific excellence. The medical center complex is home to Boston University’s School of Medicine, Boston University’s School of Public Health and the Goldman School of Dental Medicine. In addition, there is a close liaison between Boston Medical Center and Boston University's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Medical students from Boston University and other medical schools nation-wide complete rotations at Boston Medical Center including clinical rotations with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Education and the dissemination of knowledge are principal goals of the medical campus.

The Department of Rehabilitation Services at Boston Medical Center engages in clinical, socio-medical and basic science research. Currently, $2.9 million of research funding has been secured through public agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education, and private organizations such as the Edmund Lynch Foundation. The New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center at BMC is a designated National Model Systems center by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).

Our National Model Systems designation provides our clinicians the unique opportunity to work closely with researchers from Boston University’s School of Public Health on important socio-medical research related to disability. Our faculty members are actively engaged in research resulting in articles that have been published in scholarly rehabilitation journals. In addition to this, they have also published monographs covering topics such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and inpatient rehabilitation.

One fundamental component of academic programming in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is residency training. Our department is home to the oldest postgraduate Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation training program in New England. Our residency program continues to model excellence in graduate medical education. Our contemporary and innovative faculty provides strong leadership to our diverse group of residents. Research and education are crucial components to the overall growth of our department and ultimately result in the high quality of care each patient receives from Rehabilitation Services at Boston Medical Center.
