An Individual Process
The diagnoses of a progressive illness or traumatic injury resulting in a physical disability may have a wider reaching impact than is seen in a person’s physical limitations. A host of emotional changes and challenges may begin to arise; depression, anxiety, or adjustment issues can be as limiting as the disability itself. Understanding the symptoms and treatments of these emotional issues can ease the process of adjustment. Participants in this lecture will learn the emotional issues that are prevalent after the onset of a disability.
A Family Process
The family system is profoundly affected when one of member of the family has a disability, whether the disability results from a traumatic injury, a diagnosis of a progressive disease, or an existing condition, the traditional roles of each member may change, introducing a dynamic that has potential to threaten the stability of the family unit.

Understanding the unique needs of each family member and how they view their role in the family is important to maintain the strength of the family. During this lecture, participants will learn how disability affects the family system and what members can do in maintaining stability in the family.
