Depression and Coping with Spinal Cord Injury

Charles H. Bombardier, PhD, Professor, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine

Dealing with the emotional changes after spinal cord injury is as challenging and complex as dealing with the physical changes however this area is often left for individuals to deal with on their own.  Dr. Bombardier will discuss the myths about adjustment to spinal cord injury and describe the problems with the well-known Stages of Grief Model of Adjustment to Loss.  During his presentation he will also discuss what percent of individuals with spinal cord injury are expected to develop clinical depression and address both proven and unproven ways of impacting mood in those with spinal cord injury.
