MGH Affiliation
Please click on the links below for more information.
We have been affiliated with the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts
General Hospital (MGH) since 1989. Our Departments work together on many
different levels.
Clinical
Patients at BMC benefit from the
extensive know-how and resources in the MGH Radiation Oncology Department and the MGH
Cancer Center that are available to us. If required, we can refer patients to MGH for
special treatments. Our staff physicians have dual appointments at BMC and at MGH. In
addition, many of our physicians, past and present, have trained at MGH.
Radiation Physics
The attending physicians are supported by a strong team of physicists who ensure
the accurate calculation and delivery of radiation dose from two high-energy
linear accelerators and who provide an excellent quality assurance program for the
clinical treatments as well as providing support and development of new program initiatives. Our physicists work closely with MGH physicists. For example,
our IMRT program has recently been implemented in collaboration with MGH Radiation Physics.
In addition, in MGH has benefited from programs first introduced at BMC such as prostate seed implantation and stereotactic radiosurgery.
Resident Training
While Boston University does not have a Radiation Oncology Residency Program, residents
from the Harvard Combined Radiation Oncology Program (MGH, BWH, BIDMC, DFCI, & Children’s
Hospital) have clinical rotations at our Department. Residents appreciate the diverse
patient population and clinical issues they
encounter at BMC.
