Physics Team - Radiation Oncology at BMC

The Department of Radiation Oncology’s Physics Group is actively involved in the development and application of new technologies and techniques in radiation therapy planning and delivery. They assist the radiation oncologists in the design of patient treatments, using 3-D computer modeling and other advanced tools to customize the best management approach for each patient’s specific needs. Radiation physicists are responsible for making sure the radiation equipment is functioning properly and delivers the correct dose of radiation as prescribed by the patient’s radiation oncologist. Radiation physicists are also responsible for overseeing the dosimetrists. Dosimetrists assist the radiation oncologists with treatment planning. They help design the radiation beams and calculate the number of treatments a patient will need and the proper amount (dose) of radiation the patient will receive during each treatment session.
