Definition
Lipoatrophy is defined as the loss of subcutanous fatty tissue anywhere in the body and is frequently a side effect of either one's medications or of HIV itself. This can take place anywhere on the body, but the area where it can be most distressing is on the face.
Options
The FDA has approved two different products, Sculptra and Radiesse, to aid in the correction of facial lipoatrophy. Both are materials that are injected by a medical professional into the areas of fat loss and lead to a more normal, healthy look by increasing the thickness of your own skin. The side effects include the potential for bruising, swelling, asymmetry, and very rarely granuloma formation.
Products
Sculptra
Sculptra, known as New-Fill outside the US, is composed of poly-L-lactic acid. It is injected into the areas of facial fat loss and increases the thickness of the skin to mimic fullness. The effect takes place gradually over several weeks with most people requiring between 3-5 treatment sessions depending on the severity of their facial fat loss. Results may last 12-18 months before a touch up is required. Dermik does provide an access program that many patients qualify for that provides a large volume of product for no cost. Costs associated with Sculptra are in the form of office visits which at this time are not covered by insurance except in the VA (veteran's administration) system. If you are a veteran please contact you local VA to see about treatment.
Radiesse
Radiesse is comprised of calcium filled microspheres suspended in a water based gel and will give you an instant correction. Generally you can come in for one sitting and get the results you want. Radiesse, like Sculptra, is not a permanent filler and you will need touch ups once a year. Bioform will also provide product at a reduced cost for those that qualify in addition to the office fee. |
