Fellowship Program: Year Two

This is a time to further develop clinical and leadership skills in the ED. Also, the second year is very important in terms of continuing research. By this time, projects should be well under way. Administrative interests can also be developed during this year as there is less time spent away from the Pediatric ED.

Second Year Schedule

PED 6 months
Elective 2 1/2 months
Research 1 month
Adult ED (Procedure) 1 month
PICU 2 weeks
Vacation 4 wees (during PED)

Adult Emergency Department - Procedure Person
During the Adult ED rotation in the second year, our fellows act as the procedure person in all trauma cases. This means that in addition to seeing patients, the fellows are responsible for all procedures including placement of central lines, chest tubes and diagnostic peritoneal lavage.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
For two weeks, fellows work in the BMC PICU. It is a five bed unit, and the experience of caring for trauma patients, as well as complicated medical patients is invaluable. The fellows run rounds, make clinical decisions and deal with the residents and nursing staff and families of patients. During this period there is attending back-up at all times.

Electives
There are numerous electives available. They include: EMS, trauma, sports medicine, oncology, orthopedics, radiology, ENT, anesthesia, dermatology, international electives, and others. We are happy to arrange almost any elective.
