INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
International Elective for Fellows
Fellows are strongly encouraged to spend time during their first, second, and third years working internationally in an underserved country as volunteer physicians. The fellowship protects time for this experience each year of fellowship and covers travel expenses. During the first year, one month is given as protected time to go abroad, possibly augmented with vacation time. Second and third year fellows are given 2 weeks of protected time, again possibly augmented with vacation time. This amazing opportunity is newly offered and has been a very welcome and creative addition to the curriculum, developed in response to fellows' interests in gaining exposure to global medicine. Current fellows have traveled to Lesotho, Africa; Columbia, South America; and Siem Reap, Cambodia to donate service time in various types of medical settings.
