Boston Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Medicine


 

Welcome!
The Pediatric Emergency Department at Boston Medical Center is a state-of-the-art facility with 24 hour coverage by Pediatric Emergency physicians.

Our facility is a Level 1 trauma center located in the heart of the Boston's South End, with full complement of pediatric surgical and surgical subspecialty consult services.

Our team consists of experienced pediatric emergency attending physicians, pediatric emergency fellows, nurses, child psychologists, social workers, child life therapists, and pediatric residents.

We offer a fully accredited Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine for both pediatric and emergency medicine residency graduates.
   

  

Services
  

Trauma Services
The BMC Pediatric Emergency Department is part of a Level 1 Trauma Center that provides this specialized care for children and adolescents from Boston and throughout New England. Level 1 means the department has attained the highest national level designated for being equipped and prepared to provide the most critical of care.


  

Psychiatric/Social Services
Pediatric Social Work and Child Psychiatry are available to address the social and emotional needs of patient and their families through evaluation, intervention, referral, and advocacy. The staff can help you with the following issues:

  • Violence
  • Family or relationship problems
  • Medical diagnosis
  • Mental health
  • Unemployment
  • Parenting
  • Shelter and food
  • Immigration and refugee services

Child Life Services
The Child Life Program at Boston Medical Center assists children and families in coping with ED visits, hospitalizations and illness. In the PED specifically, child life specialists help facilitate our standard of pain-free pediatrics. Fun, child-oriented activities provide patients with a variety of distraction and coping techniques for various procedures and treatments. Play provides children with a safe outlet for anxiety, sadness and other emotions that may accompany an ED visit.

Fellowship Program
Our ACGME certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Fellowship program has been in existence since 1988.   Our program offers fellows a broad exposure to the clinical, academic, and administrative aspects of PEM.

The fellowship is open to both Pediatric and Emergency Medicine residency graduates.

Residency Program

BMC is proud to be one of two primary training sites for residents of of the Boston Combined Residency Program/Children's Hospital Boston.

Our PED is primarily staffed with BCRP Residents, as well as with BMC Adult ER Residents, NEMC Pediatric Residents and BMC Family Practice Residents.
