The Pediatric Emergency Department team of doctors, nurses and other professional staff are highly trained to provide initial care and treatment of all medical and surgical conditions. Specialized consultation is available 24 hours a day. Our specialties include pediatric surgery, trauma surgery, ear nose and throat, behavioral health, ophthalmology, orthopedics and oral surgery, among others. Trauma Services The BMC Pediatric Emergency Department is part of a Level 1 Trauma Center that provides specialized emergency care for children and adolescents from Boston and throughout New England. The Level 1 designation is the highest national level for trauma care. Psychiatric/Social Services Pediatric Social Work and Child Psychiatry are available to address the social and emotional needs of patients. The staff can help you with the following issues:
Child Life Services The Child Life Program at Boston Medical Center helps children and families cope with emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and illness. In the Pediatric Emergency Department specifically, child life specialists help us achieve our standard of pain-free pediatrics. Fun, child-oriented activities provide patients with a variety of distraction and coping techniques for various procedures and treatments. Play provides children with a safe outlet for anxiety, sadness and other emotions that may accompany a visit to the Emergency Department. Technology

BMC’s Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) delivers emergency care to patients aged newborn to the 22nd birthday. The PED is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. On your arrival, a trained pediatric emergency nurse will greet you, make an initial evaluation of your emergency and determine your or your child’s priority of care. Please understand that in any emergency room, the most urgent cases must be seen first, regardless of the order in which patients arrive.
