| Training of Professionals
SIDS Center staff train emergency medical professionals, hospital emergency personnel, medical examiners, and social service personnel about infant mortality. The Center provides training, consultation, and professional support for nurses who provide home visiting and bereavement support for affected families. In an effort to provide optimum support to families, the Massachusetts SIDS Center has developed outreach activities to professionals as part of its overall case management.
Center staff meet periodically with the Chief Medical Examiner. We provide training for police cadets in all police academies throughout Massachusetts. Continuing education for police officers and emergency medical technicians is also provided. Because of increased numbers of babies dying in child care situations, inservice programs are offered, not only for the providers themselves but for the licensing agency, the Office for Child Care Services.
The Center notifies the baby's pediatrician of the death, informs him/her that the Center will be providing services to the family, describes what those services include, and often provides updated information on SIDS and professional support as well.
Through the development and implementation of training and educational programs for health professionals and community groups, the Center is able to address the need for SIDS information and guidance in supportingfamilies.
