International Adoption Program

About the Program

Almost 10,000 children are adopted from outside the United States annually. Unlike other immigrant children, these children arrive without family members to provide information about their early growth and development and medical problems. The children need careful medical evaluation, and the families who adopt them can benefit from receiving information about the process and the unique aspects of international adoption. Services include pre-adoption advice, post-adoption screening and health assessment, and transition to primary care services.

David's Story

David pushed his own stroller into the exam room ahead of his mother when he was seen in the International Clinic. He had just been adopted from Ecuador at the age of two by a couple with no other children; they spoke no Spanish. He arrived with no medical information. His health assessment showed him to be a healthy, active 2-year-old who needed treatment for a positive tuberculosis skin test and for intestinal parasites. Over the next few weeks, the child was seen by his primary care pediatrician, and he began the process of receiving the necessary immunizations. He is now a thriving kindergartner who speaks fluent English.
