The Pediatric Gastroenterology Clinic provides consultation, diagnosis and treatment to patients with a variety of problems related to the gastrointestinal system. Some of the problems in patients referred by primary care physicians to this clinic include:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Recurrent Vomiting
  • Blood in the stool
  • Bloody emesis
  • Weight loss or poor weight gain
  • Hepatitis and other liver diseases
  • Gallstones
  • Jaundice in the newborn

In the process of evaluation, certain tests of blood, urine and stool, and imaging studies such as X-rays and ultrasound may be necessary for diagnosis. In addition, a number of specialized tests are available through the Pediatric Gastroenterology service, including:

  • Lactose breath hydrogen test
  • D-Xylose absorption test
  • Endoscopy and biopsy of the esophagus, stomach, and first portion of the small intestine.
  • Endoscopy and biopsy of the colon.
  • Liver biopsy
  • Rectal biopsy
  • Esophageal pH probe study
  • Rectal manometry
  • Esophageal manometry

We promise the following:

  • A comprehensive evaluation, including a thorough history-taking and
    physical examination, will be done for every new patient referred to
    this clinic.
  • The patient will be given a clear explanation about the potential causes
    of his or her problem and about tests which are indicated to make the
    diagnosis.
  • The patient will be informed regarding the risks of any procedure, and
    will receive instructions for any tests that require special preparations.
  • For any treatment, the patient will be informed about the expected
    goal of treatment and any potential side-effects.
  • A follow-up visit or several visits may be necessary to determine if the
    diagnosis is correct or if the treatment goal has been accomplished.
  • The staff will be courteous to all patients in all encounters.
  • All information will be kept confidential.
