Food
You can help hungry children by starting a food drive at your office, school, church, temple, or community group. The food pantry is always in need of donations, especially during the summer months when older siblings are at home and not being fed by school breakfast and lunch programs. The Grow Clinic Food Pantry needs high calorie, protein rich foods that appeal to a child’s likes. In order of preference, a list of items most needed in the food pantry are provided below:
- Carnation Instant Breakfast (powder)
- Graham crackers
- Rice
- Tuna fish in oil
- Thick canned stews
- Canned ravioli and spaghetti
- Canned corn
- Vegetable oil
- Canned meats (corn beef etc.)
- Box Mac and cheese
- Canned beans (not green beans)
- Raisins and other dried fruit
- Mayonnaise and salad dressing
- Canned fruits and heavy syrup (not lite)
- Cold Cereals: Kix, Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Rice and Corn Chex, Total
- Hot cereal: Oatmeal, Grits, Cream of Wheat
- Canned Chili
- Chocolate syrup or Nestle Quick
- Peanut Butter
- Canned gravy
- Instant mashed potatoes
- Canned vegetables
- Evaporated milk (not non fat powdered milk)
- Spaghetti sauce
- Pasta
- Canned or instant pudding (no gelatin)
To organize a food drive please consider the two following suggestions:
Make pledge cards to distribute in your church, synagogue, community group, or school asking people to give money for a unit or half unit of the types of food you will purchase and donate. (e.g. $15 or $30 pledge for a half case or case of Raviolis). The money raised can then be spent at a wholesale store, like BJ's, or a supermarket and delivered to the Grow Clinic. Supermarkets will often agree to sell items at wholesale if they can generate some press in exchange for discounted food.
A can drive or cereal drive also is very effective since people can conveniently shop for a single food item. This type of drive is easier to transport as well, since all items will be the same size.
How do I get donated food to the Grow Clinic?
Unfortunately, we do not have the personnel or resources to pick up food donations. We suggest that you have a committee for each phase of the food drive. Fundraising, packing, and transporting committees make the effort more participatory and democratic.
Once you are organized and ready to go, please call us at the Grow Clinic at (617) 414-5251 within a few days of your anticipated delivery date to assure that Grow Clinic staff can aid in the drop off of goods.
Clothing
Help our families and children by donating clothing appropriate for the season at the time of donation. Our children range from 3 years to 8 years of age. Please send only clean clothing that is not tattered or very worn.
Needed items: Boots, gloves, hats, mittens, coats, sweaters, long sleeved shirts, pants, shoes.
If you would like a tour of our facilities please call at least two weeks ahead of your drop off date. Drop off in kind donations is possible 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Please click here for a MapQuest.com map. Unfortunately, we do not have the personnel or resources to pick up donations.
