What is more challenging than raising a child with a significant developmental disability and/or complex medical condition?
The Comprehensive Care Program (CCP) at Boston Medical Center, is one way to support families of children with chronic conditions living in or near inner-city Boston. CCP is designed to enhance the quality of health services and social support for children and their families with developmental disabilities and/or complex medical conditions. CCP is an integral program within the department of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center.
Our program is guided by the following principles:
- All parents (advantaged or disadvantaged) need a “medical home” to bring their child for care.
- The medical home must serve to coordinate all of the input and opinions from the myriad of physicians, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists into a coherent story.
- This medical home should meet all the child’s health care and developmental needs.
- All families need support and encouragement; home visiting to provide such support is essential in many cases.
- Families deserve ready access to their medical providers, not to a stranger, especially when their child is ill.
The Comprehensive Care Program provides a “one-stop shopping” model of health care to the families who need it the most. During the regular primary visit, the child can also see a host of specialists. This cuts down on the need for multiple visits to the hospital, especially helpful for families who have difficult transportation needs.
