2004/2005 Housestaff Salary/Benefits

The following salary and benefits are set out in the collective bargaining agreement between the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU and Boston Medical Center. Further information about graduate medical education and the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU can be found here.

Chief Residents Differential All departments -- 1 PGY level higher for administrative Chief Residents
Vacation 4 weeks/year
Salary in lieu of Vacation

1 additional week of salary in lieu of vacation for all HOs whose departments limit their vacation to 3 weeks (paid out in June, 2004)

Malpractice Insurance $1million/$3 million occurrence
(Moonlighting is covered by this policy so long as it is permitted by the department and the hospital is informed.)

Health Insurance Hospital pays 85% of the average premium (excluding highest and lowest cost plans)

Extra On-Call Pay    $250/night M-F; $350/night S-S& Holidays
10/05 rate increases to $350/night M-F; $400 S-S& Holidays
If Resident called in to do extra on-call because a colleague is:
-- ill
-- disabled
-- on maternity/parental leave
-- on approved leave of absence
-- on bereavement leave
-- called for jury duty
-- temporarily reassigned
-- on vacation (if call required is every other night)
-- removed from payroll
-- and/or has resigned (to include a person who accepts appointment
but fails to arrive).

Sick Time                   15 sick days per year
As of July 1 -- 7 ½ days.
(Additional sick time accrues at rate of 1-1/4 days for each month
of actual service to a total of 15 days per year)
Unused sick time may be accumulated for use in subsequent year/s

Leaves of Absense            
 ILLNESS FMLA: up to 12 weeks unpaid leave for serious illness or serious illness of spouse, parent or child. Use sick & vacation time to make this a paid leave
 MATERNITY Up to 12 weeks unpaid leave for the birth or care of a child, adoption or foster care placement of a child under 18. Use sick & vacation time to make this a paid leave
 PARENTAL 2 weeks unpaid leave. Use sick & vacation time to make this a paid leave
 BEREAVEMENT Up to 3 days leave in addition to sick & vacation time.
