Nursing Clinical Placement
Boston Medical Center (BMC) provides a full spectrum of pediatric and adult care services; including primary to family medicine and advanced specialty care. BMC also has the largest 24-hour Level 1 trauma center in New England
The Division of Nursing and our entire staff of more than 1,500 RNs are committed to mentoring the future nurses of our profession, and hosts hundreds of nursing students and clinical faculty members each year as part of the learning process. This centralized site is intended to streamline the clinical placement process.
To the right are a series of steps and information to help you in the process of your clinical placement here at BMC.

New Clincial Instructors
If your school of nursing plans for a new clinical instructor to come to BMC for the first time with students, you must first submit the instructor’s resume/CV to ensure that his/her clinical experience is a solid match for our organization, and to optimize experiences for students, staff, and our patients.Contact Michelle Barrella at 617-414-7554 or michelle.barrella@bmc.org
Mandatory Steps
| 1. Please Begin By reading our policy on Student Clinical Placements. |
| 2. Complete and pass (at least 88%) a Medication Exam. A helpful Study Guide is available online. Please Contact Michelle to take the exam |
| 3. Learning modules on Health Stream, BMC’s e-learning software. Please contact Michelle Barrella for online access information. |
| 4. Unit-based orientation, shadowing a charge nurse or staff nurse on the unit for 6-8 hours. You will be given the number to the unit’s nurse manager to facilitate. |
| 5. Computer training class. BMC has an electronic order entry system and is highly automated. The classes are held once or twice a month, and are day-long sessions. Please contact Michelle Barrella for the schedules well in advance. Due to limited resources, we cannot accommodate 1:1 training. |

All Clinical Placements
| Required Steps |
| 1. Please Begin By reading our policy on Student Clinical Placements. |
| 2. Submit clinical placement Request Form prior to the start of each semester. Each group will have no more than 8 students, and that clinical instructor must have experience in the appropriate area |
| 3. New clinical faculty are approved only after review of CV to ensure expertise matches our highly acute, technology-driven settings. Please see the section “New Clinical Instructors.” Once approved, you will be notified by email or phone. Given the volume, we cannot always accommodate every request from each school. |
| 4. With the exception of pediatric instructors on the inpatient unit, all instructors must complete and pass (score at least 88%) a Medication Exam prior to the start of the semester. Michelle will adminster the exam. This only has to be completed once by each instructor. Study Guide |
5. Prior to the start of each clinical group coming to BMC, we MUST have verification of health status, CORI checks, and liability coverage for each faculty member and student. Please fax this Verification Form to 617-414-7575. |
6. If you have been an instructor at BMC in the past, you must have your computer password reset. Contact Cathy McDonough-McGrath, Nursing Information. If Cathy is not available contact Michelle Barella . (new instructors must attend computer training. See “new instructor” guidelines) |
| 7. ID badges for instructors and students are obtained in the ID office, ground floor of 91 E. Concord Street. You may take students here on your first day. A list of schools is emailed to them before each semester to authorize the badges. Identification must be worn on the units at all times. Please turn in ID badges back to the office at the end of the semester. |
| 8. There are several required policies and procedures that instructors must become familiar with and review with students. (HIPPA overview, Medication Administration, Patient Identification Policy, JCAHO (National Patient Safety Goals) click on links Hospital Access and then Hospital. Please fax (617-414-1757) the Mandatory Requirement Form or deliver the form the first day you start the clinical. |
