About Boston Medical Center

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a private, not-for-profit teaching institution affiliated with the Boston University School of Medicine and located in the historic South End neighborhood. Boston Medical Center's 581-bed acute hospital features Boston’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center and an extensive network of neighborhood health centers and comprehensive public health programs. As New England’s largest safety net hospital, with the Boston’s most diverse patient population, Boston Medical Center offers unequaled learning opportunities.

With 44 programs, and nearly 650 residents and fellows, residency training in the Boston University Medical Center community offers a wide range of educational and career opportunities. As a member of the housestaff you can expect to:

  • See patients with a wide range of disease entities from all over the world
  • Work with and learn from some of the most prominent people in medicine
  • Be encouraged to develop independent judgment and decision making
  • Benefit from a variety of rotations at outlying community hospitals, neighborhood health centers, and other Boston teaching hospitals
Some of the highlights of the BMC system include:

  • Our ground-breaking research, for which we received more than $86 million in funding last year, encompassing over 400 research and service projects above the research conducted at Boston University School of Medicine
  • The new Moakley Building, a best-in-class, centralized cancer and ambulatory care facility, created to streamline access to care and provide patients with the latest technology and treatment
  • Outreach programs and services among the most comprehensive in the country for a safety net hospital
  • Our Boston HealthNet network, which includes 15 community health centers located in and around Boston’s neighborhoods and in the city of Quincy
  • The most extensive interpreter services in New England, with on-site interpreters for more than 30 languages, 24-hours-a-day.
