  • Exercise
Physical activity is an integral part of our weight management program. It speeds the weight loss process, prevents significant loss of lean body tissue (muscle), and increases metabolism. More importantly, physical activity appears to be one of the major determinants of successful weight loss maintenance.

Our Center works hard to provide ideas and opportunities for increased daily activity. We are able to provide some reduced memberships at local gyms, a free weekly yoga class and pedometers at a reduced price. Development of other programs is on-going.

We often recommend local gyms including the South End Fitness Center located conveniently near the clinic (35 N. Hampton Street, Boston). At this fitness center, you may participate in group exercise and yoga classes, use the strength training and cardio equipment, or swim in the Olympic pool. The South End Fitness Center has some of the most affordable rates available charging $10/day, $99 for 3 months and $320 for 1 year membership.

Boston Medical Center Employees are eligible for an additional discount on the price of a yearly membership at the South End Fitness Center.

  • Support Services
Group Support Sessions

As we live in a fast-paced, high-stress, unhealthy food environment, our behavior classes help you build the skills necessary to lose and maintain weight. We recognize that when willpower wanes, as it will, skillpower can lead you to success. We focus on nutrition, physical activity and control of high-risk situations. When you enter our program, you are encouraged to record your food intake daily and to participate in a weekly interactive educational group session. We strongly believe that your success depends on regular attendance, conscientious record keeping and commitment to a maintenance program.

Behavioral Therapy Support

Most people who struggle with weight management are not eating out of hunger but rather eat in response to environmental and emotional influences. In order to address eating behaviors, the underlying causes of overeating need to be addressed. When group support isn't sufficient to address an individual's specific challenges to successful weight loss, patients will be referred to a clinician specializing in the psychology of eating and weight management. By developing strategies to reduce or eliminate factors blocking successful weight loss, patients will have a greater likelihood of long-term success.
