Nawfal W. Istfan MD, PhD
Dr. Istfan is currently an associate professor of medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine and a faculty member of the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and holds a PhD degree in Human and Clinical Nutrition.
Dr. Istfan is an established researcher in the fields of obesity and cancer and has been the principal investigator on numerous NIH funded grants since 1987. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in obesity, insulin resistance, protein metabolism and the relationship between nutrition and cancer. His current research focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which omega-3 fatty acids inhibit cell proliferation and cancer growth.
Dr. Istfan has held several academic positions: Assistant Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at the American University of Beirut between 1982-1984; subsequently joining Harvard Medical School where he became an Associate Professor in 1995. While at Harvard, he helped establish the Boston Obesity Nutrition Research Center (BONRC) and served as Director of its Clinical and Metabolic Core.
Dr. Istfan received his MD from the American University of Beirut and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He postgraduate clinical training was at the American University of Beirut and at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the American Society for Cell Biology.
