Nutrition and Weight Management Center

Caroline Apovian, MD FACN, Director
Dr. Apovian is currently the Director, Nutrition and Weight Management Center and Co-director of Nutrition and Metabolic Support Service at Boston University Medical Center. She also serves as Director of Clinical Research at the Obesity Research Center of Boston University Medical Center, and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Apovian is also a principal investigator for the Centers for Obesity Research and Education (C.O.R.E.) in New England. She has been an active member of the Boston Obesity Research Nutrition Center (BONRC) for over three years. As co-Director of a BONRC Core (Human Metabolic & Genetic Core), she also serves on the Executive Committee.

Dr. Apovian was recently awarded the Physician Nutrition Specialist Award given by the American Society of Clinical Nutrition to advance nutrition education to doctors and medical students.

She served as Medical Director of the Program for Weight Management, Division of Metabolic Support Service, at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School from 1998 to 2000, and was the Director of Weight Management and Nutritional Medicine at Spence Centers for Women's Health from 1996 to 2000. Prior to moving to Boston, she was the Director of the High Risk Obesity Clinic and the Director of Nutrition Support Fellowship at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Apovian has published widely in the form of original papers, abstracts, reviews and book chapters on nutrition, obesity, and nutrition support in hospitalized patients. Her ongoing research interests include novel medical treatments for obesity, monitoring type 2 diabetes, endothelial cell dysfunction and obesity, and cytokine expression of adipose cells after weight loss treatment in humans. Dr. Apovian serves as manuscript reviewer for several journals including Obesity Research, The New England Journal of Medicine, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, as well as serving on the Editorial Board of Nutrition in Clinical Practice.

Dr. Apovian serves as nutrition consultant to NASA at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. She has been selected to participate in clinical status evaluation workshops to develop the nutrition program for astronauts on future long- term space missions.

She received her M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1985. She did her residency in Internal Medicine at New England Deaconess Hospital 1985 to 1988, where she was also a Fellow in Nutrition Support from 1989 to 1990.
