Welcome to the Section of Gastroenterology

The Gastroenterology practice offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for a variety of gastroenterological disorders as well as for diseases of the liver and pancreas. Our leadership in the field, which began in the 1940s under the direction of world-renowned Gastroenterologist Franz J. Ingelfinger, continues today in clinical care, teaching, and research. The Center for Digestive Disorders combines the expertise of gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal surgeons, oncologists, and other clinical experts to provide a mutlidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment for a wide range of digestive disorders.

Our world-renowned faculty remains at the forefront of testing emerging new technologies and pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of digestive disorders. Members of our faculty have played essential roles in dictating the various activities of governmental organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the United States Food and Drug Administration. Our exceptional clinical and research faculty frequently publishes original manuscripts and reviews articles in many prestigious scientific journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Gastroenterology. In addition, the Section continues to play a leading role in several national organizations, such as the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

The Section of Gastroenterology maintains a high level of excellence in the areas of clinical care, biomedical research, clinical research, and education. By combining outstanding research, education, and clinical service, the Section has achieved national prominence, and members of the Section of Gastroenterology have continued to establish themselves as leaders in many areas within the gastroenterology community.

Diagnostic and treatment services are available for patients with general gastrointestinal problems such as peptic ulcers, abdominal pain, gastroesophageal reflux, various malignancies, and rectal bleeding as well as for patients with hepatobiliary disorders such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, pancreatic disease, and biliary obstruction. We have an active colorectal cancer screening program for average and high-risk individuals and a multi-disciplinary approach to endoscopy. We also offer specialized services in the following areas: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, gastrointestinal disorders in patients with AIDS, motility disturbances, neuroendocrine tumors including gastrinoma.

State-of-the-art diagnostic services include: upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, biliary procedures, and endoscopic ultrasonography, capsule endoscopy, and double balloon enteroscopy. The Section of Gastroenterology also provides services in the area of esophageal and anorectal manometry, esophageal pH testing, various breath tests, and acid secretory studies.
