Albena Halpert, MD
Irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disorders

Dr. Halpert co-directs the Functional GI Program at Boston Medical Center's Center for Digestive Disorders. She received her medical degree from Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine, followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology at St. Louis University. Dr. Halpert also completed an additional two years of training in functional bowel disorders and clinical research at the Center for Functional GI Disorders at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Dr. Halpert’s clinical interests include the management of functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dyspepsia, constipation and fecal incontinence. Her clinical research activities revolve around all aspects of IBS related clinical research, particularly the impact of patient education on IBS clinical outcomes and the patient-physician relationship. Other areas of interest include antidepressant treatment in IBS, anorectal motility, and gender related issues.

Dr. Halpert is a member of the American Psychosomatic Society Education Committee, Functional Brain-Gut Research Group, American Academy on Physician and Patient, American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology and the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders.
