Section Of Gastroenterology

Fellowship Program
The combined Gastroenterology Program at Boston University School of Medicine has a long tradition of excellence in both
the clinical and research aspects of Gastroenterology. The training program for GI Fellows is based at two hospitals:
Boston Medical Center, formed in 1996 by the merger of Boston City Hospital and Boston University Medical Center
Hospital, and the Boston VA Medical Center. While Boston University Medical Center and Boston City Hospital had
long been closely affiliated, the merged entity has created an academic medical center in the heart of Boston that
capably serves its unique community. In 1993, the Residency in Internal Medicine and all specialty fellowships were
merged, and therefore most teaching functions, including GI Grand Rounds, Research Conferences, GI-Surgical Rounds ,
and Visiting Professorships, are combined. The availability of two different teaching hospitals under the umbrella of
one fellowship program provides our trainees with an outstanding opportunity for clinical training, as well as for
clinical and basic research.
