Elihu M. Schimmel, M.D.
Elihu M. Schimmel, M.D., is Chief, Section of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Boston VA Medical Center, and
Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Schimmel is a native of Bayonne, New Jersey and
a graduate of the University of Illinois (with Highest Honors in Philosophy), and Yale University School of Medicine.
He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Yale New Haven Medical Center, and a USPHS Research Fellowship
in Gastroenterology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is certified in Medicine by the American Board of
Internal Medicine. Dr. Schimmel was a Fellow of the Bourne Foundation in Nutritional Biochemistry at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Visiting Scientist at the USDA Nutrition Research Center for Aging
at Tufts, where he spent a Sabbatical year.
Dr. Schimmel is a well-recognized authority in the area of Barrett's esophagus and has pioneered studies for
detection and treatment of this disorder with a series of collaborators in Boston. He established the first VA
Advanced Clinical Specialty Training Program for Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Boston VA Hospital in
affiliation with the Training Program in Gastroenterology at the former Boston University Hospital. He has
established esophageal cancer screening and surveillance programs for both average and high-risk individuals
with gastroesophageal reflux disorders. These programs integrate state-of-the-art endoscopic strategies with
novel interventional techniques such as Photodynamic Therapy in collaboration with Dr. Pedrosa. In addition,
in collaboration with investigators at the USDA Human Research Center, he is participating in an ongoing study of
tissue nutrients in Barrett's Esophagus, as well as a nutritional interventional trial for that disorder. Dr.
Schimmel also has an extensive clinical experience with inflammatory bowel disease and post-gastrectomy problems
at the Boston VA Medical Center.
Dr. Schimmel's clinical research activities focus on the natural history of gastroesophageal reflux disease, the
evolution of Barrett's epithelium, and the progression of Barrett's to esophageal cancer. With collaborators in the
Section of Gastroenterology, he explores the efficacy and utility of surveillance programs in the control of the
emergence of esophageal adenocarcinoma as a major national health problem, uniquely exaggerated in the veteran
population. Dr. Schimmel has also played a major role in the implementation of a Computer-based Patient Record
System within the Department of Veteran Affairs. He serves as Acting Chief of Gastroenterology and Chairman of
Nutrition for the participating hospitals within the VA Boston Healthcare System.
