Marcos C. Pedrosa, M.D., M.P.H.
Marcos C. Pedrosa, M.D., M.P.H., is Director of Endoscopy and Director of Hepatology at the Boston VA Medical Center,
and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Pedrosa is a native of Rio de Janeiro,
where he graduated from the leading Brazilian medical school and completed his residency and chief residency in Internal
Medicine. After moving to Boston, he completed his residency at the Faulkner Hospital and a clinical and research
Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the New England Medical Center. He is certified in Medicine and Gastroenterology
by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Pedrosa is also a Visiting Scientist at the USDA Nutrition Research
Center for Aging at Tufts in Nutritional Metabolism, He and is a member of the Photonics Center at the Boston
University and VA National Liver Transplantation Board.
Dr. Pedrosa implemented the Multidisciplinary Endoscopy Unit at the Boston VA Medical Center , a tertiary referral
site for the veterans hospital in New England. He is an expert in the area of Barrett's esophagus and has introduced
photodynamic therapy in the treatment of esophageal cancer and in the ablation of high-grade dysplasia in Barrett's
esophagus. He is also currently involved in the development of new forms of endoscopic interventional therapy in
high-risk individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dr. Pedrosa is an Associate Investigator in an ongoing
study of tissue nutrients in Barrett's esophagus, as well as a nutritional interventional trial for that disorder.
Within the Gastroenterology Section of the VA Boston Healthcare System, he plays a big role in the development and
implementation of clinical trials and epidemiologic studies. He has served as a Visiting Professor in Gastroenterology
at several international institutions.
Dr. Pedrosa's clinical research activities focus on the epidemiology and management of esophageal diseases at all
stages as well as the development of metaplasia and neoplasia. Recent projects include collaborations with scientists
in the early recognition of high-grade dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus. Dr. Pedrosa also plays a major role in the
research activities in the area of gastroenterology and liver disease of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
