David R. Lichtenstein, M.D.
David R. Lichtenstein , M.D., FACG is the Director of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at Boston Medical Center Assistant
and Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Lichtenstein is a graduate of the
University of Pennsylvania (B.A. 1981, M.D. 1985). He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University
Medical Center and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Beth Israel Hospital. He later served as Chief Medical Resident
at Duke University Medical Center and subsequently received advanced interventional pancreatic and biliary endoscopy
training at Duke University Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Dr. Lichtenstein is a nationally recognized authority in the area of interventional pancreatic and biliary endoscopy.
He serves as a committee member in the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the New England Endoscopy
Society. He directs a state-of-the-art Endoscopy Center with eight video-endoscopy procedure rooms, including a dedicated
ERCP room with facilities for endoscopic ultrasonography and ultrasound-guided biopsy, laser therapy, argon plasma
coagulation, enteroscopy, nutrition conduits, photodynamic therapy, manometry and breath testing. He supervises
Gastroenterology Fellowship training in advanced endoscopic procedures and is responsible for evaluating and
implementing new technologies. He has extensive experience with all aspects of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
including advanced techniques for management of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, pancreaticobiliary tract disorders, and
gastrointestinal malignancies.
Dr. Lichtenstein participates in all aspects of the GI clinical teaching program, pancreaticobiliary service, colorectal
cancer screening program, and the Center for Digestive Disorders. His main research activities focus on the development and application of new endoscopic
approaches for diagnosing and managing pancreatic disorders, malignant biliary obstruction, sphincter of oddi
dysfunction, application of expandable metallic stents for intestinal and ductal obstruction, and the use of novel
endoscopic techniques in portal hypertensive bleeding.
